independent vs dependent variable

 

1. Independent Variable (IV)

• The cause or the factor you manipulate or categorize.

• It’s what you think will influence the outcome.

• Example: In a study about the effect of study time on test scores, study time is the independent variable.

2. Dependent Variable (DV)

• The effect or the outcome you measure.

• It depends on the independent variable.

• Example: In the same study, the test score is the dependent variable, because it changes depending on study time.
