The Delphi Method

The Delphi Method is a structured communication technique used to gather expert opinions and reach a consensus on complex issues, particularly in forecasting, policy-making, and research.

Key Characteristics:

  1. Panel of Experts: A group of knowledgeable individuals on a particular topic is selected.

  2. Multiple Rounds: Experts respond to questionnaires in two or more rounds.

  3. Anonymity: Participants remain anonymous to each other to avoid influence or bias.

  4. Controlled Feedback: After each round, a facilitator provides a summary of the group’s responses, and experts can revise their earlier answers.

  5. Consensus Building: Through iteration, the group tends to converge toward a common viewpoint or a well-defined range of opinions.

When to Use:

  • When expert judgment is critical.

  • When issues are complex and lack definitive data.

  • In areas like technology forecasting, curriculum development, and policy analysis.
