Catering Menu Business Catering How to Write a Business Plan Business Plan Template Starting a Catering Business
by Joyce Weinberg
You need a detailed plan of action for promoting yourself and your services. The marketing plan should have a strategy for delivering and disseminating your marketing message. The concept you have developed for your business is the key to preparing this section of your business plan.
Market Analysis
Here you'll want to discuss the catering business in your area. Use all of the data you collected when you researched your business opportunity. Consider these questions:
How large is the existing catering market?
Is it growing, and if so, how much?
Have any catering businesses recently closed?
What market trends will affect your business?
Assess the local market you're about to enter and analyze its ability to support another catering business.
Within the marketing plan, you should have a marketing and promotions budget. In general, marketing and promotions should be estimated as a percentage of sales, broken down by month. As a rule of thumb, plan to spend approximately 5–10 percent of Year 1 sales on the marketing budget for your first twelve months. This will be a relatively high marketing budget, but if you don't spend the money to introduce your services and get the message out, clients won't know about you and sales orders won't come.
Fact
The cost of any samples that you hand out should come out of your marketing and promotion budget, not your food cost budget.
One of the most important goals of your marketing plan is to create awareness of your services and your brand. If last month your business didn't exist, then no one knows you're in business now. Your awareness level is zero. Your job is to let as many people as possible know about your wonderful catering services. Whether it's standing outside a busy local rail station a few mornings handing out mini muffins with your catering menus, or paying for printed postcards announcing your business and Web site, it all comes out of your marketing and promotion budget.
Competitive Analysis
Delve a little further into the catering market in your area. Identify the competition one by one and answer the following questions for each one:
What kind of catering do they specialize in? Do you see any open niches in the market?
How large are they?
What are their sales strategies and techniques? How successful are they?
Conclude this section with a few paragraphs on how you will make your business stand out from the competition.
Market Plan
You've analyzed the overall catering market and your direct competitors. Now it's time to explain exactly how your business will fit into the market and deal with other caterers.
Start the marketing plan by defining your strategy. Do you want to conquer your local catering market and become the number one caterer within five years or would you rather find a profitable niche within the local market?
Next, specify your objective. The marketing objective is to generate Year 1's sales goals in your sales plan and to create awareness and generate sales. Specify how many people you're going to contact to let them know about your business and how much of the overall market you expect to capture. For example, if the local catering market is valued at $50 million a year and you want to grab a 1 percent share of the market within five years, that means you'll have to generate $500,000 in sales by Year 5.
Aiming to grab 1 percent of the market may seem easy, but in reality it's not. Catering is a very competitive business, and your competitors aren't going to lose sales to a newcomer easily. From your five-year sales forecast, you'll be able to judge whether a 1 percent market share is attainable or whether it will require explosive growth.
ssential
Outsiders will want to know your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT). A SWOT analysis will identify your business's advantages and disadvantages and your ability to seize openings in the market and deal with threats. In Chapter 12, you'll do a SWOT analysis. Refine your analysis and include it in your business plan.
You'll be introducing the world, or at least your area, to a new brand. Describe your brand's personality in a paragraph or two, so that readers can get an idea about what your brand will stand for and what familiar brands it will resemble. Include a few photos of your signature dishes and buffet setups, as well as some sample menus, brochures, and business cards to complete the section.
Sales and Promotions Strategies
Map out your plan to catch customers' attention and explain the costs and time commitment involved in your chosen tactics. You can cold call accounts, use past clients or personal contacts, and conduct mailings. You will need materials to send or give prospective clients, and you need to construct a one-minute sales pitch. Advertising is costly, so be creative with your marketing tactics in order to conserve funds.
Fact
Building a new business and a brand takes time and effort. At the beginning, unless you have a prearranged agreement with former clients or contracts with new clients, you probably won't have a catering job every week. As you gain momentum, you should have a couple of jobs on the weekends and a job or two during the week.
Once potential clients know who you are, you need to convince them to pick you to cater their event. Invite them to a tasting party and offer discounts or a gift certificate to anyone who refers a new client to you.
Describe how you will come up with new menus and dishes and how you will introduce new services to your clients. Take into account the unique aspects of your particular market.
Strategic Relationships
Investors and lenders will want to know if you have a competitive advantage in the industry. You can gain a competitive advantage by being the first in your area to offer a certain type of catering, one that addresses a demand that none of the other local caterers focus on. You can also gain a competitive advantage from your experience and your relationships with other business leaders.
If you ran the catering operations for the best caterer in town and are now striking out on your own, you may have an edge over someone who doesn't have that experience. If you have strategic relationships or partnerships with event planners, corporate meeting planners, or are closely allied with a company that markets to engaged couples, that would give you an edge when getting new clients. Acknowledge your strengths and play to them.
Your Marketing Tactics Calendar
The marketing plan should be written by month, and you should have several complementary efforts or tactics happening at once. Spend most of your marketing money in the months leading up to your busy season.
xpertise
If you plan to specialize in graduation party catering, make sure you promote your services to parents by March, since they'll be planning their child's graduation party for May or June. Make sure you're not too early, either. Marketing your Thanksgiving menus to private homes in August, for example, is too early. Better wait until the beginning of October to start marketing your catering items for Thanksgiving dinner.
In order to reach your target, plan on using at least a couple of different avenues. For example, to reach parents of graduating seniors, reach out to local schools and see if you can participate in school fairs or could distribute your chocolate chip cookies along with a printed menu to the senior class. Also try to reach the parents by direct mail, e-mail, or by using your professional contacts. Local florists, photographers, party disc jockeys, and chair rental companies are frequently asked to provide services for graduation parties, and they all make good leads.
Your sales, promotion, public relations, and guerrilla marketing tactics should be planned out and marked on your calendar. Make sure your efforts complement each other and you have time to execute them.

The Lord High Treasurer bears a white staff as his symbol of office.
The post of Lord High Treasurer or Lord Treasurer was an English government position and has been a British government position since the Act of Union of 1707. A holder of the post would be the third highest ranked Great Officer of State, below the Lord High Chancellor and above the Lord President of the Council. The Lord High Treasurer functions as the head of Her Majesty's Treasury. Since the 17th century the office has often been held, not by a single person, but placed in commission, so that a board of individuals jointly exercise the powers of the Lord High Treasurer. Such persons are known as Lords Commissioners of the Treasury. The office has been in commission continuously since the resignation of Charles Talbot, 1st Duke of Shrewsbury in 1714.
In modern times, by convention, the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury include the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, usually serving as the "First Lord of the Treasury", and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, serving as the "Second Lord of the Treasury". Other members of the government, usually whips in the House of Commons, are appointed to serve as the junior Lords Commissioners of the Treasury.

Origins
The English Treasury seems to have come into existence around 1126, during the reign of Henry I, as the financial responsibilities were separated from the rest of the job that evolved into Lord Great Chamberlain. The Treasury was originally a section of the Royal Household with custody of the King's money. In 1216, a Treasurer was appointed to take control of the Treasury in Winchester. The Treasurer was also an officer of the Exchequer, and supervised the royal accounts. By Tudor times, the Lord High Treasurer had achieved a place among the Great Officers of State, behind the Lord Chancellor and above the Master of the Horse. Under the Treason Act 1351 it was treason to kill him.
During the sixteenth century, the Lord High Treasurer was often considered the most important official of the government, and became a de facto Prime Minister. Exemplifying the power of the Lord High Treasurer is William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, who served in the post from 1572 to 1598. During his tenure, he dominated the administration under Elizabeth I.[1]
The modern commissioners
A rarely-varied system has evolved since then. Today, the First Lord of the Treasury is as a rule the Prime Minister, and the Second Lord of the Treasury is the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who has inherited most of the functional financial responsibilities. Next rank the "Junior Lords of the Treasury" who, though theoretically members of the Treasury Board, in practice serve as Government Whips under the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury (Chief Whip).
Current commissioners consist of the Rt Hon David Cameron and George Osborne; with junior lords as Michael Fabricant MP, Angela Watkinson MP, Jeremy Wright MP, Brooks Newmark MP, and James Duddridge MP.

Javanese Proverb
“If you start off north, go north, don’t turn east, west, or south.”
-Javanese Proverb
I read this proverb from Java a few days ago and have not been able to shake it since.
To take one single direction to fruition has never been my fancy. But the thought of it, has gotten my wheels a spinning. It is a simply philosophy, and one that I can learn a few lessons from.
I have always held a certain fondness for starting off in one direction just to splinter off in another, and then another and then another, until my route of travel (or life for that matter) begins to resemble the colorful messes that elementary students call art. I have never really liked nice looking anythings, and fluid paths have never appealed to me. I think that I have made a career of dabbling – dabbling in professions, dabbling in lines of study, dabbling in curiosities. I think I am an incorrigible dabbler.
Though one who gets quite lost in his dabblings.
My path of travel has always been made up of starts and stops that go everywhere with shear signs of nonsense – and anywhere but where they where planed to go. As Andy says, “A plan is just something I do until I come up with a better idea.” I like doing things like this. I like whims. I like going north only to realize that I would rather go east, or west, or west then east then north again. I like just going to where ever my feet take me. But this Jananese proverb puts an idea into my head.
Hmm, maybe it would be fun to start off in one direction and keep going. . . Just keep on going until I have circled the globe. Maybe it would be enticing to travel towards a DIRECTION, rather than towards places. Who cares about places anyway? I don’t care much about places. The pursuit of a great path could perhaps be a far nobler pursuit than the pursuit of any great destination.
I do not believe that Richard Burton cared a darn for finding any source of the Nile or any other such place that he said he was looking for. I do not believe that he cared too much for destinations. I think he just went to Mecca for the fun of it. He went to war for kicks. It is my impression that he walked through Somalialand and got a javelin plunged through his face for the joy of the journey. I think that Richard Burton was a man who chased curiosity. He took off and kept going. I am not sure if he ever looked back. I have found a new infatuation in that bearded javelin eating explorer of humanity.
I think that there can be no end to a curiosity.
The same can be said for directions: they just keep going.
Pick a place, and you run the danger of arriving. Pick a direction and you can keep going into infinitum. Pick a curiosity and you will be lost for life.
I like the sounds of this.
I already know that I have no care for where I stand. I don’t want to stand, anyway. I want to run and keep running. Peak into a corner, peak into another, peer through the solicitous peep-hole of the world just to find out who is standing stark naked on the other side.
I have tried to stand before, though. I worked hard in university studying Chinese and Asiatic anthropology. I sat for a long time in a stiff backed chair – pretending that I was some breed of rag-tag scholar perhaps – but one day I just lost passion for any semblance of it. I realized that I simply did not care. I did not believe in the words that I was writing. I knew that it was all fairytales. In a flood, I also realized that I could not waste away another beautiful day writing some checked and balanced nonsense research paper that would be so boring that not even my poor mother could suffer through it. I did my time, I wrote thousands of such pages. But all it taught me was that the scholar killed the story teller.
I just want to tell stories.
East is now my direction.
The old time travelers always moved to the east: towards the ever beaconing morning light. East East East. East is where Europe is, the Middle East, then the Far East. To move east is to go in an even progression across the earth – with the landscape ever becoming more and more “Eastern” the further you travel. To view the world as an ongoing progression, I think that east is direction that must be traveled. East through Europe, East through Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, east to Pakistan (somehow), east through Nepal, India, Bangladesh, SE Asia, Malaysia, all the way to Java – say thank you for the proverb – and then to Japan, until I cannot go east no more
East is the direction that I choose. North you run into icebergs, south you run into icebergs, go west and you eat the desert of your travels before the dinner. Go east and you get the full course meal of planet earth.
Going East.
With Javanese proverbs in mind.
